College Journey Stories

First Generation College Students

A single moment holds each moment before it. Inspired by a photograph of one of our first-generation college students meeting the Dalai Lama while studying abroad in India, we asked each student to bring–and speak about–a single photograph that somehow typified the college journeys they had traveled. We offered that this could be any photograph–one from home, with family, on their college campus–any image that somehow honored the ways they had pushed themselves and grown as human beings through their transition to college. In selecting their photograph and thinking about what they might say, we suggested that they consider questions including:

  • Where I come from…
  • What matters most to me…
  • The deepest challenges/questions I have lived as a first generation college student…
  • The resources/supports that have made the most difference through these challenge…
  • The greatest lessons learned through my journey that I want others to know and understand…
